History Rangefinders have actually been around for quite a while; clear back into the 19th century. Laser rangefinders in particular, being not nearly as old, have only become popular to the average person in the last 20 years or so. They have been used by commercial and military operations for some time now, but these models were typically too big and heavy, and way too much for the average person to use on a day to day basis, not to mention they are much too expensive for the average person to afford.
However, a laser rangefinder has its demerits. You should have a steady hand as the laser should be accurately aimed at the target although it cane easily be overcome with practice. Also, what you cannot see, you cannot measure so much so that hills are the Achilles’ heel of the laser rangefinder. Plus, you have to deal with limited features that are standard on the GPS models.
Today we will talk about just how a laser rangefinder functions. The distance to an objective is calculated by a rangefinder by the rebounding of a laser light beam off the object to be ranged. The time it takes for the laser light beam to reach the target and return is measured by a high speed digital clock. This time that commonly takes less than one second, is then computed by the rangefinder and displayed as a distance on the rangefinders build in screen.
