Though a particular rangefinder may say it is rated to a certain distance does not mean that is what you will get out of a rangefinder. The maximum distance rangefinders will work will be dependent on the intended object’s reflectivity and the current conditions. The maximum rated distance is what most manufactures put on the box and is figured in ideal conditions on a reflective object. On deer sized animals, you will be lucky to get 75% of the maximum range and less than ideal conditions will drop the effective range even more. This discrepancy is less with the more expensive models and greater with the less expensive models.
Since laser rangefinders bounce the laser off the target, and because all targets have a certain reflectivity, part of the distance the rangefinder calculates is based on this reflective nature of the target. In other words, "hard" objects like rocks and cliffs can be easily measured at greater distances than "soft" targets like deer or other wildlife.
Today we will talk about just how a laser rangefinder functions. The distance to an objective is calculated by a rangefinder by the rebounding of a laser light beam off the object to be ranged. The time it takes for the laser light beam to reach the target and return is measured by a high speed digital clock. This time that commonly takes less than one second, is then computed by the rangefinder and displayed as a distance on the rangefinders build in screen.
